Lecturer - Music Production

Belle Murphy
How did you get your start in the Music Industry?

After being a bad bassist in bands with friends, I got into production to learn how to make demos. Soon after I got more excited about producing with computers because of how much more creative I felt I could be. And I was into electronic music, so I was excited to learn about the techniques behind it. Then it just kept on going from there...

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Making many little things that are languishing on my hard drive... do what I say not what I do students! Also having lots of fun teaching, including assisting others in industry (particularly as an Ableton Certified Trainer).

What's your favourite memory from being a part of the Music Industry?

There's lots, many of them the adventures had when working with others. One band would go away for writing weekends sometimes which was good fun. I've played some great gigs with amazing crowds, and some things that are more fun to laugh at after. Like the time the 40+ degree heat killed my gear during soundcheck for an outdoor event, so I went backstage to massage my laptop with ice in a plastic bag. "Backstage" was the old abattoir at the queen vic markets, and surprisingly this did the trick (the cool change also helped).

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Paraphrasing: make as much as you can. You get better simply by making more.

What is your favourite song?

Hard to choose! For its importance to me, The Knife - Silent Shout

Thanks for letting us learn a little bit more about you!

Check in next week to meet another BHI Faculty Member.
